Il primo precursore dei "fotografi aerei" è certamente Gaspard Félix Tournachon (1820-1910), più noto sotto lo pseudonimo di Nadar disegnatore, caricaturista, giornalista, aeronauta e fotografo Nadar si distingue per il suo carattere stravagante ed una particolare predisposizione per la ricerca. E’ proprio grazie alla sua propensione per la sperimentazione, che Nadar, ricerca nuovi soggetti da fotografare e inparticolare innovativi punti di vista da cui fotografare. Dopo aver conseguito il brevetto per aerostatica, nel 1858 nello stesso anno, il 23 ottobre, riesce ad ottenere la prima fotografia aerea facendosi sollevare da un pallone frenato ad un’altezza di 80 metri. Nadar fotografò dall’alto le case del villaggio Petit-Becétre situato nei pressi di Parigi. Nadar continuò questa sua esperienza fotografica fino a che non fu emulato dall’americano Black, nel 1862, il quale eseguì la prima fotografia aerea di Boston. Nadar accettò in malo modo il fatto di non essere più il solo ad eseguire foto aeree e per questo, a conferma del suo particolare carattere eccentrico, si dedicò alla fotografia sotterranea di fognature e catacombe. Dopo questi sporadici tentativi di foto aeree con l’ausilio di palloni, non si riparlerà più di fotografia aerea fino al 1880, quando M. Jobert, nel mese di luglio, sostenne dinanzi alla "Société Francaise de Navigation Aérienne" la sua teoria di impiegare gli aquiloni per sollevare un apparecchio fotografico. Il suo sistema consisteva nell’appendere un apparecchio fotografico al cavo di ritenuta dell’aquilone, e di servirsi di un messaggero, per eseguire lo scatto, che avrebbe dovuto essere di tipo elettrico. Il condizionale è d’obbligo giacché l’idea di Jobert non andò mai oltre che alla teoria.
Finalmente, si giunge ad un impiego sistematico degli aquiloni per realizzare fotografie aeree grazie ad Arthur Batut, il quale, ne farà una vera e propria ragione di vita.
