Un altro Americano che si cimentò in foto aeree fu J. Wallance Black. Iniziati i primi esperimenti con palloni del tipo utilizzato da Nadar, passò ben presto agli aquiloni. Black perfezionò il suo sistema intorno al 1898, quando, dopo aver costruito un aquilone a forma di box triangolare, sollevò una macchina fotografica e riprese varie immagini ad altezze che andavano dai 300 ai 1000 piedi. Black utilizzava un sistema di scatto con un rinvio a terra, ed aveva realizzato un apparato per il ritorno a terra della camera per mezzo di una vela che ne frenava la velocità.

The American J. Wallance Black experimented with kite aerial photography both with gas-filled balloons and kites. Black improved his system in 1898 by building a triangular-shaped box-kite.
Using this kite he lifted a camera at various heights between 300 and 1000 feet. The shutter was released from the ground using a thin rope. The camera was recovered using a sail that limited the speed as the system slided along the kiteline back to the ground.
